When ESPN SportsCenter anchor John Anderson seems like he is perpetually having a good time, it’s no act. The bespectacled broadcaster with a whip-smart sense of humor is among the show’s best when it comes to highlight commentary.

In fact, Anderson is such a natural ham that ABC paired him with comedian-host John Henson on the uproarious obstacle-course show, Wipeout.

“I was fortunate when I took a second job that I was not someone who took it out of necessity,” says Anderson, BJ ’87, who started the Anderson Family Charitable Foundation with his wife, Tamara, in 2009. “As a family, we had enough to take care of ourselves and perhaps a little more — and we didn’t really want to be hoarders.”

The foundation exists to provide assistance to underserved children in public elementary schools. The AFCF will host the second annual John Anderson Celebrity Golf Invitational presented by Midwest Computech — with proceeds benefitting the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri and Columbia Public Schools — on July 10 and 11 at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia.

“There’s no gigantic trophy at the end, and we don’t hand out a cardboard check for a million dollars,” Anderson says. “We hand out checks, but hopefully the winners are the people at the food bank and CPS.”

Celebrity golfers include ESPN anchors Linda Cohn and Michael Kim, MA ’91; former St. Louis Cardinals star
Andy Van Slyke; three-time NBA champion and ESPN analyst Bruce Bowen; Mizzou football legends Mel Gray, Educ ’71, and Johnny Roland, BS BA ’66; and many others.

The event also incorporates a school supply drive for the tornado-ravaged community of Joplin, Mo. A celebrity meet-and-greet starts at 6 p.m. July 10 at Shiloh Bar and Grill, where those who wish to donate school supplies are invited to meet the tournament participants.

“Even Dave Hunziker — the ruthless traitor and absolute turncoat,” says Anderson, joking about the 1988 Mizzou J-School alumnus who is the play-by-play announcer for Oklahoma State University athletics. “He manages to muster a few ounces of Missouri pride every once in a while.”
