Freshman 5,000

Freshman Mike Guinn got some assistance from his folks as he moved his TV, mini fridge, microwave, skateboard, and other essentials of college life into the Gillett Hall dorm room he shares with high school pal Alex Cooke. But if the dorms had bell carts, he could have moved in on his own.

The St. Louis native spent the summer working as a bellhop at the Crowne Plaza in Clayton, Mo. Besides making around a hundred bucks a night in tips, Guinn picked up some useful luggage-handling skills. “You’d be surprised how much you could fit on a bell cart,” he says.

Guinn had a record amount of company on campus Aug. 20, as MU’s first-day freshman enrollment topped the 5,000 mark for the first time ever. The total freshman tally of 5,027 marks an increase of 3.3 percent from last fall. Opening day total enrollment is 28,070.

Amid the crush of peers, Guinn was busy carving out a place for himself in Gillett. With an open door that had resulted in several new friends by the third day of class, Guinn felt pleased with his first week as a Mizzou freshman. Plus, he says, “I have more space here than I did in my own room.”
