Mizzou graduates participate in the Olympics

Two former Mizzou athletes competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing:

  • With a toss of 69 feet, 2½ inches Christian Cantwell won a silver medal Aug. 15. He was the only American to medal in the shot put. Cantwell, AFNR ’02, qualified in shot put with a second-place throw of 71 feet, 2 ¾ inches. Cantwell is two-time IAAF World Indoor Champion and four-time USATF Champion. In 2004, Track & Field News ranked him No. 1 in the world. Joining Cantwell on the trip to China were Rick McGuire, track head coach; Brett Halter, associate head coach and Cantwell’s coach; and Jen Artioli, athletic trainer.

  • Two-time NCAA champion Ben Askren competed in the 163-pound men's free style wrestling competition Aug. 20. Askren, BA ’07, first faced Istvan Vereb from Hungary, coming from behind to win the match on a pin. In the second match, Askren lost to Ivan Fundora of Cuba, the bronze medalist from the 2004 games.
