A river of spirit

A road trip to remember

Nearly two dozen football fans took to the Missouri River in Kansas City early Aug. 28. The group — Mizzou and Kansas fans alike — was headed to St. Louis for the Aug. 30 football game at the Edward Jones Dome between the sixth-ranked Tigers and No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini.
Landlubber and former Tiger football player Pat Ryan, BS HES ’92, hatched the idea, which may seem outrageous at first glance. But it’s peanuts for Ryan. He has organized other exotic group excursions, including one to Pamplona, Spain, for the Running of the Bulls in 1999. He also led a group to Germany for the World Cup in 2006, when he and some cronies dressed as Elvis Presley for their airplane flights and some games.
Ryan’s group is scheduled to sail from Ameristar Kansas City Casino and Hotel to Rocheport, Mo., where they’ll dock and spend the night nearby in Columbia. On Aug. 29, they’ll set out for St. Charles, Mo. Finally, on Aug. 30, they’ll cover the last 45 miles to dock near the Gateway Arch in time for the season opener at the Edward Jones Dome.
