Out of comfort zone

Student appreciates diverse cultures

Adobe Flash version 8, or higher, and Java Script are required to view the slide show for this feature story.

A family trip to Europe piqued photojournalist Robin Hoecker’s interest in world travel when she was 5 years old. Now an adult, she still has a desire to explore the world around her, and she applies it to international education. She has photographically documented trips to Europe, Senegal, China and Iraq, just to name a few. Hoecker, with the help of a Fulbright Beginning Professional Journalism Award, is currently in Germany working to spread cultural diversity.

“I guess I’m kind of a mini-diplomat,” she says. “[I’m] trying to get people in other countries to better understand the U.S., and for the people of the U.S. to learn more about the rest of the world.”

Hoecker’s world travels have given her an appreciation for various cultures. She is drawn to places that are out of her comfort zone. She documents her everyday excursions in photos and anecdotes on her blog, A Mild Case of Wanderlust. More:
