Students from MU’s College of Human Environmental Sciences, and Missouri University of Science and Technology were in Washington, D.C., Oct. 8–21, 2009, demonstrating a solar-powered home they not only designed and built but also hauled to the nation’s capital on a truck. Team Missouri finished 11th and was the most visited house at the decathlon, with 21,313 visits. The competition had a total of 305,000 visits.
The group from Missouri joined teams from 19 other universities in designing and building solar homes, then assembling them on the National Mall for a competition called the Solar Decathlon. The idea behind the event is to offer solutions to using energy more efficiently and from renewable energy sources. The solar houses were open for judging and to the public until team members dismantled them for the trek home.
